German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients:

1 (4-oz.) package of Sweetened Chocolate (I would use Baker's for best taste)
1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
4 eggs whites
1 teaspoon Vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour (preferably cake flour)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk

Tools:

Mixer
bowl
measuring cups
measuring spoons
whisk
spatula
3 cake pans 8 inches wide
cooling racks

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

1. Dissolve the chocolate with boiling water. Let cool before using it in step 4.
2. With a mixer, combine butter and sugar until fluffy.
3. Slowly add egg yolks while beating.
4. Add cooled liquid chocolate and vanilla to the batter.
5. In another bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt.
6. Add the buttermilk and flour mixture to the batter slowly, alternating between the two.
7. In another bowl, beat egg whites together at a high speed until peaks form. About 5 minutes.
8. Fold in the egg whites slowly.

Butter and flour the 3 pans and line the bottoms with wax paper. Pour equal amounts of batter in each pan and bake for 30-40 minutes. (32-36 minutes)
Let the layers cool completely. Run a knife around the edge of the pan and turn the cake out onto a cooling rack.
